Family Literacy Day 2015 Celebration
Family Literacy Day provided our students with an opportunity to spend time enjoying good literature with members of their family. This year our goal was to provide every student in the school with a minimum of 40 minutes of reading during the school day. When students are provided with at least 40 minutes of reading within the school day their opportunity for reading success is significantly increased. If every child in our school reads for a minimum of 40 minutes we will collectively read for more that 7 000 minutes.
As part of our Family Literacy Day activities we invited family members and volunteers to come into the school on January 27 from 1:00 to 1:40 pm to spend some time reading with their child (or children). During this time, parents and siblings got together within the school and read as a family. While in the school parents worked with their children to engage in six reading activities that help children to achieve reading success when used on a daily basis.
These activities include:
Provide children with the opportunities to read something of their own choice.
Provide children with the opportunity to read books successfully and accurately.
Provide students with the opportunity to read something he or she understands.
Providing children with the opportunity to write about something meaningful (and connected to reading).
Provide children with the opportunity to talk about reading.
Provide every child with the opportunity to listen to an adult read.
Throughout the day we created a “Reading Wall” to share photographs of families taking part in reading together. We had several cameras ready to capture the reading that was taking place within the school. As families read together they were asked to take part in a quick writing activity connected to the reading that took place. These writing pieces are shared on the Reading Wall.
Family Literacy Day was also a great time to share good books. We thank you for filling our school with families who enjoy reading together. Thank you for helping us celebrate Family Literacy Day!
