CBS & SCC Host Reading Workshop
Oct. 1, 2015, we held an ‘Art of Reading Workshop’ and a presentation on ‘Addictions- Let’s Talk about it Now.’ This evening was geared for parents with beginning readers. Jackie Nestman and Heather Kurz presented the reading portion. Reading is a partnership between home and school, it is not something that is solely done at school. Jackie explained that reading is made up of six building blocks: oral language- talking and conversation, phonemic awareness- understanding sounds, phonics- the letters and their sounds, vocabulary- building a data base of words and meanings, fluency- reading accurately and quickly, and comprehension- understanding what you have read. She gave parents tips on how, when your child is reading or being read to, you can encompass these building blocks. Heather Kurz modeled some of her favorite books to read, and showed how to make reading books fun, and how to bring more to the book than just reading the words. It was an excellent way to encourage parents to be more involved in their child’s reading.
Roxy Johnson, our school councillor, made a powerful presentation about addictions. Typically, when we think of ‘Addictions’ we do not think it applies to early years parents. Roxy informed us of how influential the early years are, and how they are linked to addictions. She talked about how we need to build a ‘First Aide’ kit for younger children so that when they are faced with problems, stresses, or any sort of trauma, they have the right tools to face the problems and not turn to drugs or alcohol.
Overall, the night was a great success. Thank you to all the parents that made this night a priority in our very busy lives. Investing in your child’s reading is always a great success.
