Central Butte Bulldogs football is off and running and after a couple weeks of practice the season kicked off with a week 1 home game against the Gull Lake Lions. A lot of first game jitters and early season mistakes were seen on both sides of the ball for the home team Bulldogs, but the score remained close through the first quarter and into the second. The Bulldogs showed glimpses of what they were capable of throughout the game with a few big hits defense and some hard running on offense. In the end the visiting Lions won on the scoreboard 66 – 19, but don’t let the outcome or the score mislead you, the coaches came away from the game with a feeling that the team was on the right path.
Week 2 saw the Bulldogs travel to Outlook to face the LCBI Bisons and after a good week of practice everyone was excited to see what this team could do on the field. The Bulldogs played aggressive and disciplined defense, not allowing the Bisons to settle in early and showed strong offensive capabilities combining both speed and strength; as a result the Bulldogs jumped out early and built a 24 -14 lead at the end of the first half. The second half saw both teams put together a few drives as well as some defensive stands. The physicality of the Bulldog team started to wear on the Bisons as the Bulldogs stretched their lead. Throughout the fourth quarter the Bulldogs worked in all of their players, making sure everyone saw the field and after a couple late scores from the Bisons the score ended up 52 – 34 in favour of the Bulldogs.
Week 3 had the Bulldogs on the road again, this time headed to Caronport. In what can only be described as a barn burner, neither team flexed their defensive muscles. As the game progressed the teams traded touchdown after touchdown on both offense and special teams with the occasional stop mixed in. In the second half the Cougars from Caronport were able to slow the Bulldogs slightly. When the scoring ended the score war not flattering to either teams defense, but the offenses showed explosiveness. Final score 100 – 63 for the Cougars.
