Sarah Ellis – The Writer Visits Central Butte School
Sarah Ellis is from Vancouver and she writes a variety of young adult and children’s books. She has spent her life being a librarian, a teacher and a writer. Sarah has spent the last week touring in southern Saskatchewan for Canadian Children’s Book Week, May 7 – 14, 2016. She’s was excited about meeting kids in a dozen communities from Val Marie to Moosomin as well as Central Butte.
The presentation contained a lot of information but the goal was simple: to convey to the students the pleasures of writing and reading and to encourage them in their own imaginative lives.
Using examples from her own books she discussed how a book comes to be, from its origins as a scrap of an idea in her head to its final resting place in the reader’s mind. This discussion included her sources for ideas. Sarah’s idea’s for her books come from various sources. When she is observing people and the situation she asks herself questions about what is happening or why it is happening. Sarah takes other ideas from the people she meets and what happened in her childhood. Another great resource for her is stories from her parents’ youth. Sarah has been asked to write for the Dear Canada series as well.
The students asked many great questions about the process. Both Sarah and the students enjoyed the session.
