Championships were handed out on Monday night at Peacock Collegiate.
The Moose Jaw High School Junior Volleyball League held the championship games for the Junior Boys and Junior Varsity Boys leagues on Monday night.
Peacock Prevails in Junior Boys
For the first time in 11 years, the Peacock Toilers are on top in the Junior Boys Volleyball League.
They captured the title with a three-set comeback win (14-25, 25-18, 15-5) over the Vanier Vikings in the final.
Vanier had beaten the Central Cyclones in two sets (25-18, 25-14) earlier in the night to advance into the final against Peacock.
“I don’t think you could have two teams that were more evenly matched, we’ve been back-and-forth with Vanier all season,” said Peacock coach Stephen Lys. “We didn’t want to drop the first set, but we’ve been practicing those up-and-downs all season long and they knew they had to fight out of the valley and that’s what they did.”
Peacock and Vanier finished 1-2 in the league standings without much separation between the two squads.
The Toilers were able to show a ton of progress throughout the season to come away with the championship.
“Our first week, we lost everything, but then the guys started playing tighter and getting their passes up and the wins started coming,” Lys said.
Lys said it’s big for Peacock volleyball to have the junior boys title back in their hands.
“We’ve been there a couple of times, but when you have this playoff structure, it’s win or go home, so it’s not that easy to win,” he said.
“Hopefully we can keep these guys together, we have eight grade 9s this year, so if we can keep our core, I like our chances moving forward.”
