Junior Girls Win 5th Straight City Title
The Peacock Toilers are back on top of the Moose Jaw High School Junior Girls Volleyball League after a dominating season.
Peacock finished off their campaign with a straight set win (25-15, 25-16) over the Vanier Spirits White on Monday night to wrap up the league playoffs.
“It feels great, our girls worked so hard all season, so it’s good to see them repaid for their hard work,” said Peacock coach Haylee Biden after Monday’s win.
The Toilers finished first in the regular season after losing just six sets throughout the year for a 30-6 record.
Peacock carried their strong season over to the one-night playoffs on Monday, beating the Vanier Spirits Red in straight sets in the semifinal before rolling to their win in the final.
“We went to a lot of tournaments and that helps us for playing more than one game in the night and the girls really seem to thrive on those games, they play better when they have one set under their belt, so it’s good that they got to show that off tonight,” said Biden.
The key to their success on Monday was passing as Peacock was able to set up their attack with strong passes throughout the night.
“Passing is the most important because if you don’t have a pass than you’re not going to get a set or an attack and we’ve worked on that from the very first practice,” said Biden. “We have a passing drill that we do before every game.”
Despite being strong right from the start of the year, Biden said they’ve been able to improve a lot to get to the point they’re at.
“When we started, there was a lot of talent in each of them, but the most rewarding thing for me as a coach was saying things to them, seeing them hear me and then be to execute that,” she said.
This is the fifth straight junior girls volleyball league championship overall for Peacock.
