Peacock Wins Back-to-Back Titles
For the second straight year, the Peacock Toilers are on top of the Moose Jaw High School Junior Girls Basketball League.
Peacock up ended the Vanier Spirits, 68-36, in the championship final on Thursday night, giving them their second straight title and sixth in the past eight years.
“We had a few ups and downs, we came out a little bit of nerves, but after that they settled in, they worked really hard all game and did what we needed them to do,” said Peacock head coach Krista Caplette.
The Toilers used a steady attack to pull away from the Spirits over the course of the three quarters, leading 12-8 after the first quarter and then 28-15 heading into halftime.
Peacock took full control of the game with 22 points in the third quarter to go up 50-31 after three and cruise to the win in the fourth quarter.
Alissa Wagner led the attack for the Toilers with 16 points in the win, while Skylee Woodley and Jenna Helland added 10 points each. Eight of Peacock’s 10 players scored in the win.
Caplette said their team came together very quickly this season to help them put up a league-best 9-1 record.
“We just had to go through the initial bit with the Grade 9s coming in and you don’t know them, so you have to learn how to work together and our girls learned really fast,” said Caplette. “We mixed our Grade 9s and 10s up, we didn’t want to do two different lines and maybe two weeks in they started to work together, so it went really well.’
Peacock was the top team in the league throughout the year, while finished second with a 4-6 record. The Spirits knocked off Central, 38-36, in the semifinal to advance.
Jenna Meili was Vanier’s top scorer in the loss on Thursday, posting 10 points, while Mackenzie Miller chipped in with seven.
