Peacock’s Kowalchuk Named to Team Sask

Jett Kowalchuk will get the chance to suit up for his province at this summer’s 2017 Canada Games.

Earlier this month, the Peacock Toilers grade 11 forward was named to the Basketball Saskatchewan male under-17 team, which will take part in the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg this July.

“It’s pretty humbling,” said Kowalchuk. “There’s only 12 guys on the team, so to be one of the 12 is pretty cool.”

Kowalchuk was a member of Basketball Saskatchewan’s under-16 team last year. Much of that same group is returning for the under-17 team, which was whittled down to 24, 16 and then the final team.

Having that experience from previous years should serve Kowalchuk well heading into the Canada Summer Games.

“We went to a couple of tournaments that spanned over a week, so that will be similar to Canada Games and it’s some great experience,” said Kowalchuk.

The 6-foot-5 forward led the Toilers in scoring this past season, posting 20.3 points per game.

“I’m feeling really good right now and just putting in work in the gym, trying to get better,” said Kowalchuk. “I always just look to get better every time I’m on the court and help my team win.

“I’m long and versatile, so I just try to do anything on the court that I can to help my team.”

As for how he expects Saskatchewan to do squaring off against the best players in the country, Kowalchuk said they’re heading in confident.

“We’re good, a little bit undersized, but we run the floor well and pay attention to details,” he said.

The 2017 Canada Summer Games will be the 50th anniversary of the games, “I’ve heard there’s big things planned and I’m excited,” said Kowalchuk.

The Games will be held July 28-Aug. 13 in Winnipeg.
