September 26 – 30

Although Treaty Education is embedded in Saskatchewan Curricula and taught throughout the school year, teachers and students will be taking time next week to focus on Orange Shirt Day.

All students and staff are encouraged to wear orange on Friday to commemorate Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

On September 30, Canadians across the country wear orange and participate in Orange Shirt Day events to recognize and raise awareness about the history and legacies of the residential school system in Canada.

Orange Shirt Day originates from the story of Phyllis Webstad from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation.  If you would like to know more about Phyllis’s story, you can do so by visiting https://www.orangeshirtday.org/phyllis-story.html .

Other items of interest:

  • Come down to cheer on our Bantam Girls as they host their home tournament this Saturday.  Their first game will be 9:00.
  • School pictures have been booked for October 14.
  • Student Information Verification forms were mailed home a few weeks ago.  If you haven’t sent yours back yet, please do so as soon as possible.  If no changes are required, please indicate so on the form and have it returned.
  • Reminder – if you are planning to send your child on one of our buses as a guest rider, Prairie South School Division requires 24 hours notice for paperwork to be submitted. You are welcome to call the school to make these arrangements, but please do so well in advance to allow time for me to get the paperwork completed and submitted within the required time frame.  Bus drivers have been told they are not to accept any guest riders without authorization from Transportation.  Please do not put our drivers in the position of having to deny your child a ride.
  • If you have not yet set up a SchoolCash account, we would strongly encourage you to do so!  SchoolCash is a quick and easy way to pay for school items (hot lunches, milk cards, school clothing, student fees, etc.), saves you from having to scrounge up exact cash, and eliminates the chance of cash disappearing between home and my office!
    • If you already have a SchoolCash account, but don’t seem to be receiving email notifications of new items, please check your account settings.  My Account – Manage Email notifications – I want to receive email notifications.
  • Save those bottles and cans.  Our graduating class will be holding their annual bottle drive fundraiser in October. Watch for a poster in your mailbox once details have been finalized.
  • On Monday, October 3, the Friendly Neighbours is putting on a fundraiser and have asked us to help spread the word to our families.
    • They will be selling hamburgers, a drink, and a bag of popcorn for $6.00.
    • Students are welcome to walk down to the Friendly Neighbours;  however, as this is not a school activity, please remember that there will be no staff members accompanying children on the walk, and there will be no school supervision at the fundraiser.
    • This fundraiser is sponsored by the Moose Jaw Co-op.
  • We are still missing a few families on our Avonlea School Family Wall.  If you would like to have your crew included, please email a picture to beitel.cheryl@prairiesouth.ca .
  • SLC Student Fees are due and can be paid online using your SchoolCash account. If you have not yet set up your SchoolCash account, you can send payment to the office.  For those of you new to our school, in lieu of fundraisers, our SLC asks families to pay a $20 Student Activity Fee to help cover the costs of the many activities they put on throughout the year.
