Medication at School

Recently we have had situations where medications have been brought to school without the
knowledge of staff. There are very clear guidelines and procedures from the Division that we must
follow for safety reasons.

As a school, we ask that all students and families follow these guidelines regarding medications at
school. Please refer to the Prairie South School Division’s Administrative Procedure for
Administering Medications and Medical Treatment to Students at school.

Definitions:

Essential Medications – a physician-prescribed medication that must be scheduled during regular
school hours and is necessary for the student’s health or well-being. For example, medication for
any diagnosis such as ADHD, inhaler for asthma, or an EpiPen for severe allergies.

Self-administered Medications – medications that are not prescribed by a doctor but may be
needed for health situations like headaches, body aches, cold and flu symptoms, etc. Advil, cough
syrup and cough candies are examples of self-administered medications.

Essential Medication School Procedures:
If your child requires essential medication (physician-prescribed) to be administered during the
school day, kindly follow the steps below:
1) Contact Mrs. Neufeld requesting to have the medication administered at school.
2) Request a medical form from the school office that is to be filled out by your family
physician prior to medications being dropped off at school or administered by staff.
3) Return the completed medical form to the school along with the medication in a clearly
marked container (preferably the container directly from the pharmacy). Please do not send
medications with your child.
4) Bring in any refills that may be required. Please do not send refills with your child.
5) All medications and physician forms must be updated yearly. Please plan to send all
updated information and medications prior to school starting each fall.
6) Inhalers may be kept in your child’s backpack for quick access however we also ask that a
second inhaler be left at the school office as a backup.

Self-administered Medication School Procedures:
If your child requires medication such as inhalers, pain relief medications (Advil, Tylenol, Midol),
cough syrup and/or cough drops, or any other medications, kindly follow the steps below:
1) Ensure the medication is for 1 day only. Please do not send a bottle of Advil, Tylenol, etc.
2) Email your child’s teacher and school principal to inform them your child will be bringing
medication to school. Your child’s teacher will store this medication in their desk for the day
or leave the medication at the office and will administer as needed.
3) Please reinforce with your child(ren) the importance of asking an adult for medication, not
fellow students.
4) Students offering medication to other students is strictly prohibited.

Thank you for your attention to this important school procedure.
