Two Weeks for Terry

On the afternoon of September 21st, Palliser Heights students and staff participated in a walk and run to kick off ‘Two Weeks for Terry’ at the school. After watching a quick video and listening to some inspirational words from our Principal, Mr. Gauvin, we hit the playground for some exercise!

Over the next two weeks, we will attempt to raise $3500 for the 35th year of this important cause. By visiting www.terryfox.org and clicking on Donate Now, you will be able to find Palliser Heights School and make a donation(s) directly through the website. Although we will be raising money for a limited time, Terry’s lessons of perseverance, determination and courage are enduring.

Welcome Back BBQ

September 9th was indeed a busy day at Palliser Heights School! In addition to the Tipi Raising and Round Dance, our school community was treated to a welcome back barbecue. The evening provided wonderful opportunities to both catch-up and meet for the first time. Many students and families also enjoyed the ‘Punt, Pass, Kick’ competition held on the playground.

It is rumored that our talented grilling and serving staff knocked out over a thousand hot-dogs! Thanks for a great turnout!

Tipi Raising and Round Dance

The afternoon of Wednesday, September 9th was very special for Palliser Heights School. Students, school and central office staff, Prairie South board members and community members were all treated to a tipi raising and round dance.

Jeff Capo led the day, sharing tipi teachings and traditional knowledge in his engaging and humorous way. Those in attendance learned many things, including what each pole of the tipi represents and how tasty bannock is!

A special thanks to Wayne Fisher and Trevor Cozart for dancing after the tipi was raised and to the students of Palliser Heights for showing such respect during all of the afternoon’s activities.

National Aboriginal Day 2015

Palliser Heights students from Mrs. Danylchuk’s, Mr. Gallagher’s, and Mme Lariviere’s classes participated in National Aboriginal Day 2015. The day was held in Crescent Park on Thursday, June 18th. Students from all over Moose Jaw made hearts to represent residential school survivors. After a ceremonial march, led by three residential school survivors, the students planted their hearts in the lawn. Alex Stevenson, from Grade One, was presented with a blanket from a survivor. There was a moment of silence and then everyone was entertained by several music groups. It was a day of education, hope and understanding. A day that will not be forgotten. Thank you to Mrs. Vivian Gauvin and her students at Central Collegiate for organizing this special event.

Earth Rangers Visit

On Earth Day 2015, Palliser Heights School was treated to a timely visit by the Earth Rangers. Students and staff heard important messages about biodiversity and conservation in Canada. The audience particularly enjoyed the fascinating live animals shown to them by the Earth Rangers. This visit was made possible through numerous sponsors, including the Honda Canada Foundation.
