Family Literacy Day 2016
Family Literacy Day was on Wednesday, January 27. We celebrated this special day with our students, their families, and members of the community in two special ways.
Family Game Time- Often when we think about family literacy skills we think about the time that is spent with our children reading books. We believe strongly in the importance of reading with children, however, there are other activities that families can take part in to help develop literacy skills. One of those activities includes playing cards and board games with children. These games often incorporate many aspects of literacy development such as oral language skills, decoding, comprehension, writing, and critical thinking skills. All of these are important foundational literacy skills for children.
On Wednesday, January 27, we invited families and community members to join us at the school from 1:00-2:00 pm to celebrate Family Literacy Day and help promote, develop, and celebrate the literacy skills associated with these games.
Read-a-thon- On Family Literacy Day we also had a Read-a-thon to promote reading within classrooms. Throughout the day, individual classrooms read (independently, read-aloud, buddy reading) to carry out the Read-a-thon. Once one classroom was finished their portion of the Read-a-thon they passed the responsibility of reading on to the next classroom. Our goal was to make sure we had at least one classroom engaged in reading throughout the entire school day.
