CARDBOARD BOAT CHALLENGE

Imagine having to build a boat. What would you use? Would cardboard even cross your mind as a prime building material?

Each Year, Prairie South Schools hosts the Cardboard Boat Challenge for grade 8 students. This competition is sponsored by Skills Canada, and unites their critical thinking and practical skills with knowledge of buoyancy gathered in Grade 8 Science. On May 12, Mrs. Lagassé and her young boatswains created four fine watercraft – entirely out of 2 sheets of cardboard, 1 roll of packing tape, and 1 roll of duct tape. Then they set sail… across the pool at the Kinsmen Sportsplex… powered entirely by the students riding in them. All of our boats made it at least partway across the pool – which is a great accomplishment.

Congratulations to all on a job well done!
