Peacock grade 11 Mason Kurz also made an appearance in hurdles at provincials last year, finishing in 12th place overall after making it into the final of the 100-metre hurdles. His teammate Shawn Campbell also cracked the hurdles final and finished in 14th place.
Kurz said he was able to shake off the rust a bit during Wednesday’s mini-meet.
“The first few weeks are a bit rough,” he said. “It takes a lot of flexibility and once you start doing it more often, you get use to it and it comes naturally.”
In his first race of the season, Kurz finished first in the senior boys 100-metre hurdleson Wednesday, posting a time of 16.56 seconds.
“I felt pretty good today, I was a bit high over the hurdles, but I’ll fix it as I go throughout the year,” he said.
Kurz added that his goal is to get back to provincials this year and practice will be the key moving forward.
The local athletes will get their first big test of the season coming up this Saturday with the Moose Jaw Invitational at Gutheridge Field. Everything gets started bright and early at 8:30 a.m.
