Student Leadership Council (SLC)

The Student Leadership Council (SLC) is a group of students from grades 7-12 lead by staff advisors. The SLC provides opportunities for students to share their ideas and interests with the student body, staff, and administration. By participating in the SLC, students develop leadership skills such as communication, planning, organization, and problem-solving.  These are just a few of the things the SLC has sponsored or hosted over the years:  spirit days, our year end fun day, prizes and incentives for special days and events, gifts of recognition, guest speakers and presentations, food and treats, team jerseys, paying for the yearbook upfront, keeping clothing orders at cost, school  improvements, and other school initiatives.

The SLC asks each family to pay a  $25 per student “activity fee” (as outlined in the Prairie South School Division Administrative Procedure #505,  which allows the SLC to ask families for a fee – maximum of $50 per student per year – for SLC sponsored events and items).

If the SLC does have a major special event that needs to be fundraised for, they will investigate options to help us raise additional funds.

Canteen

In the spring of 2020, Avonlea School won a $10,000 Mosaic Grant.  The grant is used to build a nutrition program and canteen that can provide healthy and nutritious food options.

The funds raised from the canteen go to support trips, etc. for all students in the school. We ask grades 7-12 to take turns doing shifts to help the canteen run. It is headed by canteen managers who oversee that there is product, and operations are being run properly.

Our canteen runs at the morning recess for grades 7-12 and at lunch time for K-12 students.  Our milk program will run simultaneously with the lunch canteen program.

The canteen is now cashless! Students can purchase prepaid accounts to use during the school year.  Money can be added at any time throughout the year.  Any balances on accounts will be returned to families at the end of the school year.

The canteen menu changes based on product availability and the season.  Please check the school website for updated menus and prices.

Sports

All students in grades 7-12 are invited to participate in SHSAA sports.  Any student involved will be required to complete an Athletic or Extra Curricular Contract.

Travel Funding for extra-curricular travel for league play will no longer be covered centrally at the division level.  Therefore, we must rely on parent drivers for all league and exhibition play.  We hope that all parents will do their very best to take turns and to offer to each coach when and/or how often they can drive.  All coaches will be responsible for organizing drivers.  Each parent driver must fill out a Driver Authorization Form (this must be done yearly) and have a criminal record check completed (this only needs to be done once for the entire time your child or children are in school, unless circumstances have changed).

As well, the cost of funding Sports Officials is no longer supported by Central Office.  Schools will have to work together to determine what is the best option for them to cover the cost of officials.  Avonlea School has an extra-curricular fee schedule to be used to cover cost of officials, uniforms, and equipment above and beyond league play.

*Fees are subject to change year to year.

You can keep up-to-date on all sports schedules by using the live Sports Calendar.

Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)

Our Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Committee is an organization of Grade 7 to 12 students who raise money and awareness to help inspire other students to think twice before engaging in activities that may include alcohol, drugs, or violence.

Graduation

Graduation is usually held on a Friday in May.  The month may vary due to the calendar set each year.  Administration will set the date and communicate with parents and students.

For a student to be eligible to take part in the formal ceremonies for Grade 12 Graduation, they must be in a position where it is possible for them to meet the 24 credit requirement and all other required credits.

See this Graduation Handbook for all details specific for graduation.
